Profit Over Hype: How to Track Real Money in Reselling

You’re making sales. Packages are going out. Your numbers look big. You feel busy.

But here’s the truth that separates hobby resellers from full-time winners:

Sales are vanity. Profit is freedom. 😄🔥

If you want reselling to pay your bills, fund vacations, or replace your 9–5, you’ve gotta track profit—the real money you keep—not just what comes in.

Why “I Sold $5,000 This Month!” Doesn’t Mean You Made $5,000

Sales is the top line. It’s the total amount customers paid you.

Profit is what’s left after the real world takes its cut:

  • Cost of goods (what you paid for the item)
  • Platform fees (eBay/Posh/Mercari/Depop fees)
  • Shipping and supplies
  • Promotions / boosted listings
  • Refunds and returns
  • Mileage, storage, tools, apps

You can do $5,000 in sales and keep $1,200… or keep $3,500.

The difference is tracking.

The Two Numbers That Matter Most

If you track nothing else, track these two every single week:

Net Profit (Dollars)

Net Profit = Sale Price – All Costs

Profit Margin (Percent)

Profit Margin = Net Profit ÷ Sale Price

If you’re not tracking margin, you might be working hard on items that look productive but barely move your bank account.

Track Profit Per Item (This Is the Game-Changer)

Every listing and every sale should have these core fields:

  • Sale Price (what the buyer paid)
  • COGS (Cost of Goods Sold — what you paid)
  • Shipping Cost (what you paid to ship)
  • Platform Fees (marketplace + payment processing)
  • Supplies (poly mailer, tape, label, etc.)
  • Other Costs (promotions, returns, partial refunds)

Then calculate:

Net Profit = Sale Price – (COGS + Shipping + Fees + Supplies + Other)

That one line turns reselling from guessing into a real business.

Estimate Fees Without Overthinking It

Start with simple estimates, then tighten them as you go:

  • eBay: roughly ~13–15% (varies by category + promoted listings)
  • Poshmark: 20% for items $15+
  • Depop: varies, plus payment processing
  • Mercari: varies depending on current fee structure and options—use the order breakdown per sale

If you don’t want to calculate every fee manually, use the totals from the order receipt page and plug them into your tracker. Even if you’re slightly off early on, the habit builds the skill—and you’ll get sharp fast.

Do a Weekly Profit Check (15 Minutes That Changes Everything)

Pick one day each week and make it your “business check-in.”

Track:

  • Total sales
  • Total profit
  • Best item profit
  • Worst item profit
  • Top category profit margin

This tells you what to double down on and what to stop wasting time on.

Because time is your real inventory.

Separate “Cash Flow” From “Profit” So You Don’t Get Tricked

This is where a lot of resellers get fooled:

Money comes in… then reality hits:

  • Shipping
  • Fees
  • Restocking
  • Supplies
  • Refunds

So track both:

  • Cash Flow (money moving)
  • Profit (money you keep)

Profit builds your future. Cash flow keeps the machine running.

Build a Simple Monthly Profit Dashboard You’ll Actually Use

Keep it simple and powerful. Here’s a monthly dashboard that works:

  • Total Sales
  • Total Profit
  • Profit Margin %
  • Average Profit Per Item
  • Items Sold
  • Inventory Spend
  • Returns / Refunds
  • Top 5 Most Profitable Items
  • Top 3 Most Profitable Categories

This is how you start running reselling like a pro—without making it complicated.

Shift Your Mindset: You’re Not Just a Seller, You’re an Investor

Every time you buy inventory, you’re making an investment.

Ask yourself:

  • “How much profit will this item produce?”
  • “How fast will it sell?”
  • “Is this worth my time to photo/list/ship?”

The goal isn’t to be busy.

The goal is to be profitable.

A Simple Profit Example (So You Can See It Clearly)

You sell an item for $50.

  • COGS: $8
  • Fees: $9
  • Shipping: $6
  • Supplies: $1

Net Profit = $50 – ($8 + $9 + $6 + $1) = $26

Profit Margin = $26 ÷ $50 = 52% 🔥

Now imagine doing that 100 times.

That’s how people quietly build real income with reselling.

Tracking Profit Makes Reselling FUN Again

When you track profit, you stop wondering if you're doing well.

You know.

You get confidence.

You get direction.

You get momentum.

And you start making decisions like a pro:

  • “That category isn’t worth it.”
  • “This brand is my bread and butter.”
  • “I’m done with low-margin items.”

That’s power.

That’s growth.

Your Challenge: Track Profit on Your Next 10 Sales

This week, track profit on your next 10 sales.

Not perfectly. Just honestly.

Then look at the results and ask:

“What should I sell more of?”

That question is how resellers become real businesses. 🚀
